Description
Saint-Étienne-du-Mont is a church in Paris, located on the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève in the 5th arrondissement, near the Panthéon (close to the Latin Quarter). The church is situated along the Place de l'Abbé-Basset, which is a route from the 5th arrondissement in the Sorbonne district.
The space defining the square where the church is situated is located between Place Sainte-Geneviève, Rue de la Montagne-Sainte-Geneviève, and Rue Saint-Étienne-du-Mont. The square (although it looks more triangular than a square), is of the open type and is more a piece of street than a real square. It is also a crossroads of multiple smaller and quiet streets. The place had no name before its inauguration in 1981, but it became known from the advance of the northern façade of the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, which you see in this image (really a tight pedestrian passage).
The church contains the shrine of St. Geneviève, the patron saint of Paris. The church also contains the tombs of many famous people, including Blaise Pascal and Jean Racine.
On 23 August 1997 Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass there during the visit to Paris on the occasion of World Youth Day.
