Description
This is an image a newly constructed church in the city of La Paz, Honduras. The town dates back to 1750 when two Spanish colonies existed in the area, and was officially established as a city in 1792. Today it has an estimated population of 46,000 people. It is 750 m (2460 feet) above sea level on the Comayagua River in an area that has mountainous terrain with thick jungle cover. The town's economy is based on henequen (a fiber resembling that is used for twine and paper pulp), coffee, cattle, timber processing, tanning, distilling and some mining. I am told that the town is called La Paz for a reason; it is one of the most peaceful towns in all of Honduras.
In ascending the mountain in La Paz, I came across this wonderful construction – a new church. It is a very small church that is being built for the locals on the mountain top with donations from the local government and one of the big wig politicians. In chatting with the local construction guys and the care taker, I couldn’t really get a name for this church, and everyone seem to call it simply (for now) the Church on Top of the Mountain in The City of La Paz.
