Description
Walking through the Historic Center of Comayagua (colonial capital of Honduras) is a delight for the senses, from its streets to the old buildings, all give an account of the importance of this city in the past and the present. And one of those buildings that are part of that historical legacy is the Caxa Real. It is situated in the San Francisco neighborhood one block east of the Municipal City Hall (featured in one of my other images of Comayagua).
Caxa Real is a brick-and-coral-colored building that is dedicated to social, cultural, educational and business events. It was built between 1739 and 1741 to store all tributes to the Spanish crown, including gold and silver. In addition, bars of gold, plaster and silver were cast on this property (then called Casa de la Moneda) and further moved to Guatemala, which was the then Central American capital to Spain. The building suffered serious damage with the earthquakes of 1774 and 1809, and in 1840, when it was operating as a Government House, it was destroyed by a fire. In 2013, it was restored by the Municipal Mayor's Office with cooperation from the Spanish Government, and for that purpose they used the same original plans and designs as in 1741.
