Description
This is a closer view of the Eglise du Dome that sits within the National residence of the Invalides.
A bit of history on this complex of buildings. The project was initiated by Louis XIV as a home and hospital for aged and sick soldiers. By the time the project was done, it had about 15 courtyards and a chapel, with attendance to the chapel being mandatory by all veterans. Shortly after the veterans chapel was completed, Louis XIV ordered the construction of a separate private royal chapel. This was the Église du Dôme shown in this image. The design and construction of the dome was inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.
Today, Les Invalides (also known as Hôtel National des Invalides, The National Residence of the Invalids, and Hôtel des Invalides), is a complex of buildings in the 7th arrondissement of Paris. It contains museums and monuments, all relating to the military history of France, as well as a hospital and a retirement home for war veterans, the building's original purpose. The buildings also house the Musée de l'Armée, the military museum of the Army of France, the Musée des Plans-Reliefs, and the Musée d'Histoire Contemporaine, as well as the Dôme des Invalides, a large church with the burial site for some of France's war heroes, most notably Napoleon Bonaparte.
As I mentioned in my previous image of the same title, more on this complex and the church in future postings (with lots of daylight)!
