Description
Who is Ms. Gherardini again?
Well, she is better known as the Mona Lisa. Her real name is Lisa Gherardini, the wife of Francesco del Giocondo. Leonardo da Vinci painted this portrait of Ms. Gherardini for her husband Francesco del Giocondo sometime around 1503 to around 1506. Francesco was a silk merchant at the time. From everything I read, it seems that the painting was commissioned by Francesco and his wife for their new home.
The Italian name for the painting, La Gioconda, means jocund or the happy or jovial one. The word Mona is an Italian polite form of addressing someone. It started off as Ma Donna (similar to Ma Lady or Maam, etc. in English). Over the years, Ma Donna became simply Madonna, then contracted to just mona.
And now you know!
Just a little note on me photographing this image. I dont know if youve been inside the Louvre, but the line up to see and photograph the Mona Lisa is horrendously long and extremely crowded and chaotic. Once you are in the general area where you can actually take a picture (which is probably no more than about 4 meters towards the front facing the painting by about 10 meters along the sides), you have only about half a second (or less) before you get shoved and pushed and yelled at by 20 million tourists (not recommended if you are claustrophobic), most with point-and-shoot cameras snapping a gazillion images, some with automatic flash (even though flash photography is not allowed). And if you happen to make it to the front, then you get pushed forward by the crowd behind trying to get closer to the painting. And if you happen to trip over the rope line, you get pushed back and yelled at by security guards lined up at the front like a police force during public riots! Almost feels like being on a 10 ft sailing boat in the middle of the Atlantic!!!
Having said all of that, you can imagine the quality of my photo shown here, which is snapped at extremely high ISO, extremely fast time value, no tripod (tripods are not allowed in the Louvre), with thick protective glass casing glaring over the painting. This is the best I could do.
Hope you like it.
