Description
The Tuileries Garden is a public garden located between the Louvre Museum and the Place de la Concorde in Paris. The area was created by Catherine de' Medici as the garden of the Tuileries Palace in 1564 and was opened to the public in 1667. It became a public park after the French Revolution. In the 19th and 20th centuries, it was a place where Parisians celebrated various events, met for outings, went for picnics, strolled, and just relaxed.
The garden of Catherine de' Medici was initially an enclosed space 500 m long by 300 m wide, separated from Catherine's chateau by a lane. It was divided into rectangular compartments by six alleys, and the sections were planted with lawns, flower beds, and small clusters of trees. During the reign of Henry IV and Louis XIII, the area went through various transformations and were turned into a pleasure spot for the nobility. During the late 1600s and early 1700, the gardens and the open space around the gardens were abandoned for nearly forty years and fell into a state of disrepair. Later in the 18th century, the gardens and the public space were brought back to life with various repairs and attractions, and later being used for celebrations with outdoor concerts and fireworks. Also, various statues and large sculptures were brought in to decorate this massive outdoor space. In the 19th century, the Tuileries Garden became the place where ordinary Parisians went to relax, meet, stroll, enjoy the fresh air and greenery and be entertained.
This is an image of one of the large sculptures adorning the open space immediately next to the Place de La Concorde.
