Description
Painted Hills are located in the mid-eastern section of Oregon, and are one of three geological units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, located about 9 miles (14 km) northwest of Mitchell, Oregon. They are listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon.
The Painted Hills are named after the colorful layers of its hills corresponding to various geological eras, formed when the area was an ancient river floodplain. I'm told (and have seen) that the colours of the hills change depending on the time of day and the type of lighting throughout any given day. I was fortunate enough to witness them during the early morning hours.
