Description
This is an image of one of the most iconic structures in Paris. So much has been written and documented about it, but here are some additional facts that may sound surprising to some.
The Eiffel Tower was originally intended for Barcelona, Spain, but the project was rejected. After it was built, it was going to be demolished in 1909, but was saved because it was repurposed as a giant radio antenna. Gustave Eiffel had an apartment for himself at the top of the Eiffel Tower. And during WW2, when Hitler visited Paris, the French cut the lift cables on the Eiffel Tower so that Hitler would have to climb the steps if he wanted to reach the top. He would have had to climb 1,665 steps to reach the top! Inventor Franz Reichelt died by jumping from the top while testing a parachute of his own design.
If the Eiffel Tower was built today, it would cost about US$31 million. And today, it is said that the Eiffel Tower is the most-visited paid monument in the world with an estimated 7 million visitors every year. It is lit on a regular basis with over 20,000 light bulbs of different colours providing different designs at different times of the year.
All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software.
