Description
Watson Lake is a fairly large lake located at Watson Park about 4 miles from Prescott, Arizona. The lake is known for its sky-blue calm waters surrounded by huge granite boulders (known as the Granite Dells) with protruding vegetation.
Watson Lake is one of two reservoirs at the Granite Dells. The other one is called Willow Lake. These were formed in the early 1900s when the Chino Valley Irrigation District built a dam on Granite Creek. The City of Prescott bought the reservoir and surrounding land in 1997 to preserve it as recreational land. Both Watson Lake and Willow Lake are Audubon endorsed bird watching areas where you will spot hundreds of bird species including eagles and pelicans. The area is also used quite frequently by local rock climbers. Swimming in these lakes us not allowed, however, they are used for rowing by locals and visitors.
As you can see form this image (and the next couple of images), the surrounding granite boulders create spectacular photo opportunities, particularly around calm water. These images were taken very early in the morning.
All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software.
