Description
Joshua trees are the most familiar and iconic plant species within the Mojave Desert. If you see Joshua trees, you are definitely in the Mojave Desert, no questions asked. They are considered to be part of the agave family and are not trees, although they can grow up to 30 feet tall. They are named as such because Mormon settlers thought their shapes looked like the prophet Joshua praying and pointing to the sky.
In the eastern portion of the Mojave Desert, Eastern Joshua Trees grow shorter than the Western species with more branches (sometimes shrub-like), and the leaves are shorter. There are many other differences between the two species (flower shape, fruit shape, pollinators, etc.).
All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software.
