Description
This is a close-up of the actual lamp (Fresnel Lens) of the Old Point Loma Lighthouse in San Diego, California.
The highly polished Fresnel lens that was used at this lighthouse (and utilized by many lighthouses) is a very beautiful object. It refracts and reflects light to create prismatic colors when viewed from certain angles. It’s almost a miracle that a small flame in a lamp can be magnified to the extent that ships far out at sea can easily see it and be guided to safety. Light intensified by those types of lenses can be seen 18 to 24 miles away! These 19th century lenses are truly works of art made of highly polished brass and glass (light bender); and in this case it used to focus light almost 400 feet above sea level. A Fresnel lens design is attributed to Augustin Jean Fresnel (1788-1827) who was an accomplished engineer and a scientist.
The original Point Loma Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located on the Point Loma peninsula at the mouth of San Diego Bay, and is situated in the Cabrillo National Monument. It is no longer in operation as a lighthouse but is open to the public as a museum. It is sometimes erroneously called the "Old Spanish Lighthouse, but in fact it was not built during San Diego's Spanish or Mexican eras (was built in 1855 by the United States government after California's admission as a state).
The Old Point Loma Lighthouse was not just the housing for a light; it was also the home of the people who took care of the light. The keepers and their families lived in the lighthouse, and was a bustling family home. Visitors can now view some of the rooms to see what their life was like. Today the lighthouse is no longer in service but stands as a landmark and museum.
