Description
Upon returning to Sedona, Arizona, I just had to re-visit Cathedral Rock, one of the most famous landmarks of the Sedona skyline. It is no doubt in my mind that Cathedral Rock is one of the most-photographed sights in the Sedona area. It is one of the main attractions simply because of its array of red sandstone formations, which appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting of the sun. These red rocks form a fascinating subject or even just a simple backdrop for many photographers who flock to this area from all over the world.
Cathedral Rock is located in the Coconino National Forest in Yavapai County, about a mile west of Arizona Route 179, and about 2.5 miles south of the "Y" intersection of Routes 179 and 89A in uptown Sedona. The summit elevation of Cathedral Rock is about 5,000 ft.
Geologically, Cathedral Rock is carved from the Permian Schnebly Hill formation, a redbed sandstone formed from coastal sand dunes near the shoreline of the ancient Pedregosa Sea.
Cathedral Rock was called "Court House Rock" and Courthouse Butte was called "Church House Rock" (on some early maps), which has caused endless confusion ever since.
