Description
The Church of St. Ludmila (Kostel svaté Ludmily) is a neo-Gothic Roman Catholic church situated in Peace Square (Náměstí Míru) in a district of Prague called Vinohrady. It was built between 1888 and 1892 and is one of the dominant features of this district. It is named in honor of St. Ludmila of Bohemia.
This church is a brick made three section basilica with a transversal nave in the shape of the cross. The church front features two 60 m high towers with bells and the tall gable with portal above the main entrance with sculptures. The interior of the church is very rich in color windows, paintings and sculptures.
The church was closed between 1974 and 1992 for the construction of the Metro system. In September of 1992, the day of veneration of St. Ludmila, the whole temple was reopened in the solemn ceremony of consecration of the new altar, and the bells rang again on the towers of the church.
At present, Christmas and Easter fairs, open-air concerts, and charitable sales are often held in front of the church. The church is open to visitors only during services.
