Description
Goosenecks State Park is a state park (largely undeveloped) located in Utah. It overlooks a deep meander of the San Juan River. The park is located near the southern border of Utah a short distance from the town of Mexican Hat and the town of Blanding.
The following series of images are taken from the edge of the deep canyon above the sinuous river meander (known as a gooseneck). This small park has some impressive views and breathtaking scenery of one of the most striking examples of an entrenched river meander on the North American continent. The San Juan River twists and turns through the meander, flowing a distance of over six miles while advancing one and half miles west on its way to Lake Powell. What you see is the results of 300 million years of geological activity, where the San Juan River winds and carves its way through the desert 1,000 feet below and the surrounding landscape slowly rising in elevation.
All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software.
