Description
Another interior image of the Cathedral De Santa Maria situated on the north end of Parque Central and city center in the City of Comayagua in Honduras. It is also known by the name of The Immaculate Conception Cathedral or simply the Comayagua Cathedral, it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is one of the oldest cathedrals in Central America, built from 1634 and inaugurated in December 1715, with most of the construction work taking place between 1685 and 1715. It was finally blessed in 1715.
This towering white cathedral is considered by many to be the most beautiful cathedral in all of Honduras. Four of the original 16 hand-carved wood and gold-plated altars still survive. The clock and bell in the church tower is one of the oldest in the world and the oldest in the Americas. Built around 1100 for the Alhambra in Granada, the clock was given to the town as a gift from King Phillip III and originally was placed in the Iglesia La Merced before being moved here. The church is undergoing an extensive renovation and is closed to the public for the next several years.
All images are taken with a Canon 5D III (full frame) and a Canon 7D II (crop frame) using a variety of Canon L-Series lenses, and Tamron and Sigma pro-line lenses; processed in RAW with ACR, PSC, Photomatix, and a variety of other imaging software.
